We got the opportunity to ride the 2009 Dura Ace Mechanical version. We also got to play with the Electronic shifting platform on their test platform. Here’s a few of the things we learned:

  • Electronic shifting uses the same shifting action as their mechanical versions but with much shorter throws.
  • When shifting the rear derailleur to through the range, the front derailler adjusts automatically to prevent chain rub.
  • The front shifting from small to big ring is different experience since one does not have to push hard to get the chain up to the ring. Electronics provides the muscle

Mechanical version observations:

  • Weight savings is 135 grams
  • Shifting action is noticeably snappier and more pronounced
  • The brake levers are positioned outward on their neutral position. It looks a little odd but the benefit is the lever does not have to go too far in during the shifting motion.
  • The shifting throw is 20% shorter than the previous Dura Ace.
  • The rear derailleur uses more cable pull to be more tolerant of cable contamination and slight mis-adjustments
  • A compact crankset will be available. A triple crankset will no longer be available.
  • The rear cassette will be available in up to a 11-28 tooth version.
