In late 2008, we published a first impression article about Flash-Point FP60 wheels from Zipp Speed Weaponry. In the year and change since that original feature went live, several seasons of test miles have been logged on these wheels, over every condition of asphalt imaginable. With the state of roads here in the mountains above Santa Cruz, we have access to the very best and the absolute worst of surfaces, a great test bed.
The FP-60s have grunted up 18% grades with twisty spun-out backside descents, flown on gusty, surf-side TT circuits, cranked away over rolling road centuries and jumped into Saturday morning group sprints; they’ve pretty much done it all. Although I’m still superstitious about using spendy wheels day to day, they’ve held up just as well as a sturdy training wheel would have under the same conditions. Plus, there’s a speedy responsive feel to these wheels that no trainer could ever match.
While other wheels from Zipp come with an intimidating price tag that matches their excellent performance attributes, Flash-Point FP60s are a value driven bargain with very little performance surrendered. Anecdotal comparison time – prior to receiving the FP60 wheelset, I had the pleasure of reviewing a set of Storck 69er tubulars, also made by Zipp, to Storck’s specifications.
They seem like a great all-purpose wheel.
Though I wonder if the Hed Alps was actually a bit better; lighter (less than 1600 grams) but still has the aluminum braking surface and structural carbon.
It’s a shame they don’t make them any more.
Their 50mm rim depth might be a bit more versatile as well.
