At The Sea Otter Classic back in April, I ran into the folks at Zym Products. They sell a couple of different training electrolyte supplements that are in the form of large tablet (for size think of an alka seltzer tablet). The tablets come in a handy plastic tube. You simply drop one into a water bottle and it dissolves. The resulting electrolyte beverage is a little effervescent, subtly sweet, and doesn’t leave an after taste. After sampling both flavors (lemon-lime and berry) I like the Catapult Berry flavor best.

Another reason I like the berry version? Guarana. Each tablet contains 100mg of caffeine. I’m a coffee addict, so getting a little dose of my favorite drug with every swig is a bonus.

This past weekend, we did an 80+ mile California Route 1 coastal ride from Santa Cruz to San Gregorio and back. With Zym in the bottle, I felt amped throughout the ride, and had plenty of energy for the after-ride BBQ. Maybe the other folks at the BBQ would disagree with an amped thinkcooper as being a good thing, but from my perspective, it was.

Zym. It gets the thinkcooper buzz of approval.

I don’t like the fact it’s got aspartame in it, nor does my brother, but he tried a sample and he really liked how he felt throughout his first 16 mile run enroute to his first marathon, as well as afterward. After trying the sample he (we both) got at another event, he wanted to buy some. The local Performance Bike shop in Naperville, Illinois no longer carries it (due to some corporate vs. distributor issue or something). I checked the drinkzym.com website again to find only online shops listed. I’d like to get some more for my brother to try again, to see if he really benefits from it and can tolerate the aspartame (on the rare occasions I consumed any, aspartame seemed to have given me a headache). I’m trying to keep an open mind and if it’s what the body wants to perform and it seems to ease recuperation, I want to give it another try. My brother definitely wants to try it again now. I don’t want to mail order and he doesn’t want to wait… he’s going to start trying other stuff at the store, though I haven’t found the same combination of electrolytes, minerals and b vitamins elsewhere. It would be nice to find some soon. (:

The only problem I have with trying them is the fact that they are carbonated! Wouldn’t that kill you mid-run?

  • June Ray says:

    Please don’t drink it.

    Thanks for letting me post.

  • Steve Cooper says:

Carsen – there’s only the very slightest amount of carbonation when first mixing, and once the water bottle with ZYM is opened up after adding a tablet, that carbonation dissipates.

I use the Camelbak Elixer precisely because Aspartame gives me some jitters. I tried the Lemon-Lime from Zym and sure enough I felt like 10 plus cups of coffee.

If the Aspartame doesn’t bother you, this is a better buy and tastes pretty much the same as the Camelbak tablets.

  • Steve Cooper says:

Here at Interbike, I had the opportunity to meetip with folks at Zym. The official word? Aspartame is no longer in the product.

  • Biker Dood says:

Zym has guarana and cafeine and you think it’s the aspartame that’s giving you the jitters?
Glad to hear they took it out, though. For taste reasons.

  • ndbike says:

I´ve got the ingredients list right here in front of me, and I can tell you that there is NO aspartame in Zym. It uses the same sweetener as the competition and quite possibly less of it because it comes later in the ingredients list.

ZYM has a new formula for 2009 that no longer contains aspartame
