Pedal Force TT2 Time Trial Frame Pro Review - By Steve Cooper

Targeting budget minded cyclists, Pedal Force has dominated the performance/value segment with frames that handle on par with bikes costing many times more. Their TT2 Triathlon/Time Trial frame, list priced at $900, is no exception. In performance terms the TT2 surrenders nothing to its higher priced brethren, and from an aesthetic perspective the TT2 is alluring and draws lots of attention at any event.

For the review, Pedal Force supplied their large 54.5 cm carbon weave frame with a mid-level component package and matching fork, seat tube clamp and teardrop seat post. At 1420 grams for the frame, 460 grams for the uncut fork and 260 grams for the seat post, there are lighter time trial frame packages but with careful component selection and a little deeper budget an ultra-light TT rig can be built.

Fully assembled, our TT2 just surpasses the 17 pound mark, very respectable for a time trial bike. With a 75.5 degree seat tube, 73.0 degree head tube, and 980 millimeters axle to axle the TT2 is a steep, triathlon/time trial specific ride. Top tube lengths match seat tube heights for the full range of frame sizes. The large frame provided enough seat post shaft length to match my road seat height to bottom bracket axle of 32.5 inches. While there is another inch of seat post above the minimum insertion point, I feel as though I’m at the outer range of the large TT2’s fit window.

This is a review of the Fizik Ares saddle, which is expressly designed for time trials. Fizik has been making some fantastic products and the Ares is the newest in the line. Fizik’s most well known offerings include:

The Arione — extremely popular and uniquely longer than most saddles (unfortunately, this saddle causes numbness for me)

The Aliante is perhaps the most comfortable saddle ever made; I can’t recommend it highly enough for folks who commute. And it will make any “superstiff” bike a lot more tolerable.

The Antares, while not as comfortable as the Aliante, is an excellent triathlon saddle and provides a firmer ride than the Aliante that doesn’t rob any power.

So I was really excited to test the Ares, thinking it could be the ultimate triathlon saddle.

Tour de France 2009 - Stage 1 Results - Fabian Cancellara Powers to Stage 1 Win

Fabian Cancellara will wear the very first Maillot Jaune of the 2009 Tour de France with a dominating performance in stage 1’s time trial through Monaco. Eighteen seconds ahead of tour favorite Alberto Contador and a minute and six seconds ahead of defending champion Carlos Sastre.

Seven time champion Lance Armstrong made his return to the Tour de France with a solid performance earlier in the day and held the number 1 slot briefly.

2009 Amgen Tour of California - Levi Wins Solvang Time Trial

Defending Champion Levi Leipheimer Races to Win Individual Time Trial in Solvang for Third Consecutive Year - Fans lined up ten deep in some places along the 15-mile individual time trial route in Solvang to welcome world-class cyclists from 17 professional teams for the critical Stage 6 individual time trial of the 2009 Amgen Tour of California. Tom Zirbel is the only domestic rider to crack the Solvang Time Trial Top 10 - By Lyne Lamoureux
Bissell’s Tom Zirbel improved his time trial result by a whopping 58 seconds over last year’s showing in the Solvang Time Trial at the Tour of California. Video First Look - Look 596

Back in July at the Look 2009 launch, Ming Tan of Look Cycles USA introduced us to the new 2009 Tri/TT 596. Riden by Thor Hushovd during this years Tour de France, the new state of the art bike was developed in Nevers at Looks worldwide headquarters and is the first Look frame to use carbon nanotubes. Not far from Nevers is the famous F1 Magny Cours Wind Tunnel (yes, the same wind tunnel many F1 and Lemans cars are tested at), and according to Look the only wind tunnel able to run tests with spinning wheels. Look took to this tunnel to develop the 596, and during their time there, developed several iterations of what would eventually become the 596. One of the major designs they worked on was the gap between the rear wheel and the seat tube. What most bike manufacturers have adopted, is a fairly tight gap, but Look found that design caused a lot of turbulence in the area behind the seat tube and ran counter to the ultimate goal of cheating the wind. So engineers actually added more space to give the spinning air somewhere to go. A radically different direction, but not completely unfounded, as many Lemans race cars have louvered fenders to reduce pressure in their wheel wells. Time will tell what design ultimately wins out…

Tour de France 2008 - Stage 4 Results - Stefan Schumacher Stuns and Wins!

schumacher.jpegIn the first race of truth at this years Tour de France, German Stefan Schumacher surprised all and rode the TT of his life for a stage win. A 29.5 km somewhat hilly, but testing course around Cholet. Surprised by the win himself Schumacher had this to say after the stage, “”No, no, I am not a specialist in the sprint. I have no chance against someone like McEwen. Short climbs are my speciality. I won the Amstel Gold race that way.”

Race favorite Alejandro Valverde who lost the yellow jersey yesterday showed signs of fatigue by coming in 1min 7secs behind his closest rival for the tour win, Australian, Cadel Evans. Evans came in just 27″ seconds behind Schumacher.

Kristin Armstrong crushed the competition to win Yokohl Ranch Exeter Time Trial

Kristin Amrstrong (Cervelo-Lifeforce) crushed the competition in the Sequoia Cycling Classic Yokohl Ranch Exeter Time Trial, winning the race of truth with a lead of four minutes seventeen seconds ahead of Alex Rhodes (High Road) and four minutes fifty seconds in front of Felicia Gomez (Aaron’s).

The US national champion Armstrong blitzed the finishing line in perfect form giving her a final time of one hour, one minute and thirty-one seconds. For anyone counting, Armstrong would have finished 26th in the Men’s Time Trial held earlier.

“It’s early so everyone is going to be at a different fitness level this time of year, March is early to be fit, people that are out here doing well today may not be the same people here in two or three months. It was a great course, a great organization I’m happy I came out here.” said Armstrong.

The Sequoia Cycling Classic Time Trial is the second race in the NRC Calendar for the women, and the heavy hitters came out to play. The first race, the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Criterium held in Santa Rosa, was won by Tibco’s Brooke Miller.

The 40 kilometer (24.6 mile) course started off with a 400 feet climb over Rocky Hill and into rolling and twisting Yokhol Valley gradually climbing 400 feet again before the turnaround and return to the start/finish line. The valley was absolutely beautiful with blooming mustard wildflowers but I doubt that anyone has a chance to enjoy it during the ride.

“It was great, it was very terrained, tail wind going out, headwind coming back, lots of twisting and turning. They call it the race of truth for a reason and I really think that you couldn’t… there was not a minute out there that you could relax or take the pressure off, so I think that the people that are going to be up on the podium today are going to be the ones that raced hard the whole way.”

“I’m going up, I’m just now kind of coming into a little bit fitness. I leave for Europe on Monday, I’m going to do the Spring campaign with my new team Cervelo-Lifeforce and I’ll come back and race Montreal, Philly, Nature Valley with my team and then I prepare specifically for Beijing. My team is based out of Lucerne, Switzerland it consists of riders from all over the world and I’ll be the only American, but there’s a New Zealander, an Australian, some German girls, Swiss girl, Austria so it’s just a variety of gals, really nice, our team is really into time trial specialists, I think that so far, so good. It’s been a really fun time working with international gals.”

“It was pretty, long obviously. I was happy with my ride, to come second to Armstrong, she’s awesome so to be on the podium, I’m stoked.

“Winds were not too bad. I sort of like the wind, it’s the only time where being a little bit heavier kind of helps (laughs) , see it helps when you eat ice cream. Obviously, with the team this year it’s nice to repay all the faith they have in me. “

Felicia Gomez (Aaron’s Pro Cycling Team), third place
“It was hard, it’s a hard course which definitely suits me better. Like short, flat prologue-like that’s not really my thing, give me something that’s strong, hilly and hard , I can stay out there for a long time. It was good, what can I say, I’m really pleased, it’s a big year, Olympic year, you’ve got to be coming out the starting block guns blazing. I feel like my fitness is where it needs to be, you know to lose against Kristin Armstrong, I mean geez, and then Alex Rhodes who’s one of the best in Europe, I’m pretty happy, really I couldn’t ask for more.”

“We got these new bikes, I’ve been on it for a week, I love the bike, they are great, they’re hand me downs from Quickstep, I’ll take Bettini’s bike any day (laughs). It’s great, the bikes are fast. I’ve been working a lot of my TT and so to finally put in a really good one, to see that the hard work has paid off, I’m thrilled.”

“I’ve been doing at least once a week of intervals on my TT bike and then riding it a lot. Last year I had drastically changed my position and obviously it didn’t work for me because I sucked so this year I went back to what I was a couple of years ago and just really worked on being comfortable on the bike and I always knew that I could put out the power but it was being in a position that would allow me to generate the power and go fast so I think I was able to do that.”

Ben Jacques-Maynes wins Yokohl Ranch Exeter Time Trial

Continuing where he left off last season, Ben Jacques-Maynes (Bissell) defended his title and won the Yokohl Ranch Exeter Time Trial, part of the Sequoia Cycling Classic. After 40 kilometers over a hilly terrain, Jacques-Maynes crossed the line in fifty-six minutes, twenty-five seconds with a lead of forty-nine seconds over second place Rory Sutherland (Health Net-Maxxis) and one minute fifteen seconds in front of third place finisher Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast).

The riders went out at 30-second intervals with Ben Jacques-Maynes in the final positions on the start list.

“I had guys in sight the whole time, steady flow of riders to catch and that always helps motivation and I never cracked, I was working my gears really well and doing what I could.” said Jacques-Maynes.

Rounding off the top five were Heath Blackgrove (Toyota-United) at one minute seventeen seconds back from Jacques-Maynes and Karl Menzies (Health Net-Maxxis) with one minutes 20 seconds gap.

While not part of the NRC calendar for the men this year, the Sequoia Cycling Classic has a long tradition, and is one of the last few training races before the NRC races start in April, and riders are taking one of the few last opportunities to refine their forms. A lot of riders are still recovering from the illnesses from the Amgen Tour of California and were using these last few races as testing ground.

The course started off with a 400 feet climb over Rocky Hill and into rolling and twisting Yokhol Valley gradually climbing 400 feet again before the turnaround and return to the start/finish line. Conditions were windy with a tailwind on the way out and a strong tailwind on the return with rain falling on a few of the last competitors.

“We did a training camp in Visalia several years ago on Sierra Nevada, I’ve ridden all these roads plenty of time, the third time I’ve done this time trial, I did the Rocky Hill road race, way way back when, that was actually my first pro race ever, so got a pretty good history year in Visalia, last year was good, the year before I was second in the time trial. So I know these roads, it’s beautiful out here, definitely hard, hard riding. You never feel like you’re in a rhythm, these roads are always up and down, turning, watching pot holes, always thinking that you could be going faster, never in a rhythm, and coming back over Rocky Hill was just brutal, headwind, I was just trying to make it over the hill honestly.”

“With a big break with the end of Tour of California and the start of the NRC racing, I’ve purposely taken a bit of a break, I was a week sick, and then I took another week off. So this is actually the end of my first week back of training, I want to be a bit underdone right now and not be going too well. I’m going at time trials, that kind of comes naturally to me but there’s definitely room for improvement on my form for coming into Redlands and Georgia. Looking forwards to the month of April and stepping back into the NRC races. We’re just going to go out and race as hard as we can, try to win as many races as we can.”

Rory Sutherland (Health Net Maxxis), second place
“It wasn’t the greatest, I don’t think a 40k timetrial is meant to go well, that’s the idea. For Karl (Menzies) and myself, we come here with no team support, it’s pure training for the next few weeks coming up getting ready for the big competition so the fact kind of reiterates that things are going in the right direction. I would have been content with being in the top 10 just to race again after the last fee weeks off. It went okay I guess and I think timetrials like this without a lot of pressure on top of them are very good timetrial training in general, you can kind of get used to your position and try different things and there’s not so much stress associated with this, it’s a good test in that respect.”

“I got sick straight after California like I had the whole week off, I’m still coughing up things. I think that everybody’s come out of that like in an interesting state, there’s a small percentage that seems to come out healthy and stay healthy. “

“Back to 100%? probably not, but that doesn’t necessarily say that if I am I’m going to go a minute faster. I feel like I need to be healthier but I’m in a good mental state at the moment and that’s the best thing.”

Reid Mumford (Kelly Benefit Strategies/Medifast), third place
“It’s pretty hilly, it’s a tough course, that hill on the way out is tough but with 30 second intervals between the guys is pretty nice because you have people to chase right away so I caught my 30-second and minute guy pretty quick on that hill, it’s pretty good. I don’t have more power than everybody but I have a pretty good position on the bike so with the wind and the hills, I think it worked towards my favor a little bit.”

“Headwind on the way back, so on the way out there, it feels pretty good, you’re going pretty fast and you feel good, and then after that turn around you have some hills to come back out and then a lot of headwind on the way back in, so you had to be sure to keep something in the tank on the way back, so yeah pretty happy.”

“We worked with some guys, Steve Hed, he knows a lot about positioning, he does our wheels and bars and we had some good times with him and he helped us dial in our position, took a lot of the width out of my shoulders with the position of my elbows so that helped a lot I’m sure, it’s good to work with people that know what they’re doing. “

Heath Blackgrove (Toyota-United), fourth place
“It’s a tough course. It’s a challenging course, up and down the whole way, with a bit of wind today. Hadn’t really seen much of the course beforehand so it was a bit of a surprise. Yeah a 40k time trial, you know how to pace yourself for that. “

“It’s hard to say (where my form is), I’ve felt about average this last week, so really just here for training and try to get some good racing as well. It’s not often that you get a long time trial like this so I think it’s really good. Building up for Redlands. After the way I felt this week, I’m pretty happy with today, but I still think I’ve got a bit to improve so. Go for myself in Redlands or help the team, we’ve got some good hitters, we’ve good some good depth this year.”

Karl Menzies (Health Net-Maxxis), fifth place
“I was a bit surprised, I’m not like Ben, Rory or any timetrialist. I’m either good or I’m bad. I was good today. As Rory said, it was good training to do a 40km effort where it just against yourself, you can just see where you are with fitness. I’m pretty happy, I could not have gone any quicker.”

“I’m pretty pissed off that I’m only three seconds off Blackgrove, that’s annoying. Five seconds off Reid, I think I would have been on the podium otherwise, with five seconds. Five seconds, I would have been on the podium, it would have been a beautiful photo.” said a laughing Menzies.

In the unofficial and unannounced ’stylin’ competition, the winner is blogmeister Michael Hernandez (VOS Racing) with his all white skin suit. But is a white skin before Easter allowed? Coming second, with an honorable mention is Mark Santurbane (California Giant Berry Farms), who finished 11th, with his multicolor shoe covers.
