Trek Bicycle Earns People’s Design Award

WATERLOO, WI–A bike designed for the people has been recognized by the people. After weeks of online voting, the Trek Lime was awarded the 2009 “People’s Design Award” at the 10th annual National Design Awards presentation ceremony held the evening of October 22nd by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in Manhattan. The Lime edged out 197 other nominees for the prestigous “public choice” award, and joins the ranks of past recipients such as the Zon Hearing Aid and Tom’s Shoes. The award was presented to members of Trek’s engineering and industrial design teams by culinary and television personality Tyler Florence.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by an institution like the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt,” said Trek Brand Manager Eric Bjorling. “There are a lot of people who put their heart and pride into the Lime project and this is validation of that dedication.”

Introduced as the answer to the millions of American adults who do not ride a bike, the Trek Lime bike was the first to feature Shimano’s revolutionary Coasting system. At the center of Lime’s design is the reminder that riding a bike should be as enjoyable today as it was when you were a child. With its comfortable, upright riding position, automatic transmission and pedal brakes, Lime is designed to ride the way we did as kids — spontaneously, socially, and to experience the sheer joy of motion. Lime is the ideal bike for the casual rider who wants a fun, convenient and stylish way to run out for a cup of coffee or a breath of fresh air.

Trek Unveils All-New 6 Series Madone

<

CÔTE D’AZUR CAP-MARTIN, FRANCE and WATERLOO, WI - Trek Bicycle today announced an all-new 6 Series Madone, the stiffest, lightest, and fastest Madone yet. Unveiled to the world against the backdrop of the Col de la Madone — the storied climb where seven-time Tour de France Champion Lance Armstrong has tested his pre-Tour fitness since 1998, and the climb for which the Madone is named — the new 6 Series Madone establishes a new benchmark for total performance, pushing the boundaries of road bike design and integration with a host of new technologies, including the latest addition to Trek’s proprietary OCLV Carbon family, OCLV2.

“The 6 Series Madone represents another major technological milestone for Trek,” noted Trek’s Road and Triathlon Brand Manager, Nick Howe. “We’ve been working on this project since before the release of our last Madone [in 2007], and have been through 70 design iterations before we had a product worthy of the Madone designation. To be able to introduce the bike in the place where it received its name is very special for us, and we’re excited about sharing it with the world.”

“There are new ideas integrated into this bike,” noted seven-time Tour de France Champion and Trek athlete, Lance Armstrong. “This is next generation stuff. The Madone has evolved, and we’ve ended up with something that’s the lightest, stiffest, fastest, best bike that I’ve ever ridden. I think there’s no doubt that the equipment we’ll ride in this Tour de France will be far and away the best equipment in the peloton.”

Possible New Trek Madone for 2010?

It was just two years ago this very month that Trek announced a new radically different, designed from the ground up, ‘no constraints’ Madone. And though it’s still a relatively fresh platform for Trek, they’ve been making slight updates to the design over the last two years. But what we see here might be more than minor tweaks.

Lance Armstrong and Levi Leipheimer recently showed up to the Nevady City Bicycle Classic on blacked out Madones. We can only suspect they’re Trek’s latest prototypes of a new Madone coming for 2010.

Rocket Shower® — the “Showerless” Body Cleaner — Now Being Distributed by Trek

Fredericksburg, Texas - The world of cycling has just gotten a whole lot cleaner, because now IBDs can conveniently get their Rocket Shower fix through Trek.

With Rocket Shower, no need to worry about shower facilities at work. A few quick sprays of Rocket Shower all over your body (yes, even “down there”) and you’re ready for the day. The spray-on, wipe-off formula quickly and effectively cleans and refreshes the body, cools the skin and helps prevent even the worse body odor. Simple. And effective.

“I’m really excited that Trek has decided to distribute Rocket Shower to its dealers,” says Linda DuPriest, founder of 10 Nine 8, the makers of Rocket Shower. “Trek’s ‘One World, Two Wheels’ program and its ‘Women Who Ride’ club are key in getting more people on bikes. I’m very happy to be a part of company that is so forward thinking and making an impact on the cycling culture.”

Rocket Shower removes one key obstacle for people looking to commute by bike: personal hygiene. Rocket Shower is formulated using witch hazel, citrus, mint, vitamin E and a trace amount of alcohol. Delivered via pump sprayer, the formula cleans by helping evaporate sweat and killing the bacteria that cause body odor. The lasting peppermint and grapefruit oils cool the skin and provide a fresh, clean feel and fragrance.

“I developed Rocket Shower after the office where I worked moved into a facility with no shower,” says DuPriest. “At first I just used the product myself everyday after riding to work, then other bicycle commuters started asking for it. Now it’s available to everyone.”

DuPriest, who worked as the advocacy director at Specialized for a decade, says Rocket Shower is very popular with women cyclists, bike commuters, and triathletes who work-out numerous times each day but don’t have the time to shower between exercises.

“I have found that once dealers try Rocket Shower they immediately see the benefits and order the product.”

Rocket Shower comes in non-aerosol spray bottle sizes of 8.5 oz., 4 oz., and 2 oz., which is perfect for airplane carryon. The 8.5 oz size is also available in a fine mist sprayer. For those who want to spare the landfill and reuse their Rocket Shower sprayers, gallon and quart bulk refill sizes are available. The Rocket Shower product line also includes three versions of the Jet Pack™, a complete clean-up kit that fits easily into a messenger bag, backpack, airline carryon or checked luggage.

All 10 Nine 8 products are available through Trek or at www.10nine8.net or 512/785-7751.

Trek 2.3 WSD Pro Review

Trek 2.3 WSD Pro Review

Trek 2.3 WSD Pro Review - By Karen Cooper

  • Frame - Trek Alpha Black aluminum w/TCT carbon stays
  • Fork - Bontrager Race, carbon
  • Wheels - Bontrager Race
  • Tires - Bontrager Race Lite, 700 x 23c
  • Groupset - Shimano 105 (w/an Ultegra Rear Derailleur)
  • Brakes - Aluminum dual-pivot
  • MSRP - $1809

Meet the Trek 2.3 WSD
When I first started riding road bikes, the woman’s specific design movement hadn’t really gained much momentum. Over the last few years, the trend has really taken off, with lots of manufacturers thinking about what we women need in a bike and designing equipment that fits those needs.

The Trek 2.3 WSD (Women’s Specific Design) is a good example, filling a spot midway in the full WSD product line-up. The next jump up the line moves into Trek’s base Madone WSD. Below the five Madone WSD models, Trek offers a 1.2, 1.5, 2.1 and 2.3 WSD spec levels with prices ranging from $880 MSRP for the 1.2 to $1809 for the 2.3 we tested. For reference, the lowest equipment spec level of the Madone WSD jumps to $2,469 MSRP.

The 2.3 WSD comes in a wide range of frame sizes: 43cm, 47cm, 50cm, 54cm, and 56cm; I tested the 47, listed as an XS. Compared to the seat tube height, the top tubes start out with slighter longer on the smallest frames, and gradually transition towards shorter top tubes on the larger frames. The head tube angles are relaxed for a comfortable, stable ride, a confidence inspiring choice for beginner to intermediate level women riders. With full sloping top tube and seat tube sizes down to a 43 (the only WSD size to run a 650c wheel), the Trek WSD line allows even the shortest of us girls to get into a perfectly sized sporty road bike.

Trek Launches Trek Stop Pilot Program in Madison, Wisconsin

“How many times have you found yourself in need of a tube, flat repair kit, or pump and the local bicycle shop was closed?”

trek_stop_1a.jpg

On July 1st, Trek installed the very first Trek Stop in front of Machinery Row Bicycles in Madison, Wisconsin. It didn’t take long before it caught the attention of locals and bloggers a like, and word of mouth spread. What is a Trek Stop you might ask? The Trek Stop is a vending machine for basic bicycle parts, anything from patch kits, spare tubes and chain lube to water bottles and energy bars and gels. The kiosk sports a bike repair stand and floor pump to aid in the repair of a flat or perhaps a busted chain. If you’re not sure how to repair your bike, a video in the kiosk will serve as a guide for minor repairs such as flat repair.

The lone kiosk in the pilot program sits outside of Machinery Row Bicycles in Madison (the largest metropolotian city closest to Waterloo, Trek’s headquarters). And is slated to run for the remainder of the summer before Trek evaluates it’s success.

Cyclists find what they need at Trek StopWe caught up with Rebecca Anderson, director of advocacy for Trek’s ‘One World, Two Wheels’ campaign and Michael Hammond, Trek Design Engineer to find out more about the program.

What prompted the Trek Stop program?
Rebecca - Trek Stop is not meant to replace a local bike shop, but rather just be an extension of one. Auto drivers have all sorts of support from service stations to tow trucks but there isn’t much for cyclists so the Trek Stop is meant to help fill a gap.

Michael
- Trek Stop is a direct result of user research. Trek’s ACG and Industrial Design groups spend a lot of time talking to real cyclists to understand needs. With the data we get from our users, we generate new concepts - some of the concepts go to production, some do not.

How long is this pilot program slated to run for?
Rebecca - We’ll keep it running through August and figure and decide from there.

Waterloo, WI – Trek Bicycle today announced that 3‐time Ironman Champion Chris Lieto has signed a two‐year extension to his sponsorship agreement. A Trek athlete since 2006, Lieto will now continue to ride and race on Treks through the 2009 season. Unique among the sport’s elite athletes in that he participates in pro 1/2 road racing as part of his training regiment, Lieto will race both his Trek Equinox TTX SSL and a Trek Madone 5.5 for the 2008 season.

“I am thrilled to continue on as a part of the Trek team for the next two years,” said Lieto. “Representing Trek is an honor, and I am proud to partner with a company that produces such high quality products. Their investment and commitment to superior quality and performance is unparalleled, and I can’t imagine riding any other bike. Heading into the 2008 season with Trek gives me confidence that I’ll have a distinct performance advantage over my competition and that my year is going to be strong once again.”

“There is no better ambassador for Trek than Chris Lieto,” noted Trek Road Bike Brand Manager, Scott Daubert. “No one is as professional as Chris at providing equipment feedback and spreading the good word about Trek and Bontrager speed parts. Trek and Bontrager are trying hard to make a bigger impact in the world of triathlon and with athletes like Chris representing us, we’re sure to continue making a difference.”

With a racing pedigree dating back to Lance Armstrong’s 2005 Tour de France Championship, Trek’s Equinox TTX has been painstakingly refined in the wind tunnel into the ultimate wind‐defying triathlon bike. Careful attention to aerodynamic details has helped the Equinox TTX score the lowest drag numbers ever recorded at the San Diego Low Speed Wind Tunnel by a male athlete. Chris Lieto will rely on these superior aerodynamics to provide him with the advantage he needs as he races for victory at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. Trek’s Equinox TTX is available in four models for 2008, from the extreme value OCLV White TTX 9.0, to the flagship OCLV Red Equinox TTX 9.9 SSL, which tips the scales at a feathery 16.8 lbs. Equinox TTX prices start at $3079.99.

Completely redesigned for 2008, Trek’s all‐new Madone sets a new benchmark for the ultimate road racing bike. Featuring a host of innovations and technological advancements, the all‐new Madone strikes the perfect balance of low weight, structural efficiency, everyday usability, and unmatched ride quality. Available in Pro and Performance fits, both sharing Trek’s proven racing geometry, the all‐new Madone comes in three different OCLV platforms and 11 different models, including women’s specific design models. Prices for the all‐new Madone start at $3019.99.
