Greipel wins again to secure Vuelta lead

(CNN) — Andre Greipel has taken control of the Vuelta Espana after he snatched victory in a sprint finish at the end of Thursday’s 174km fifth stage from Tarragona to Vinaros.

The German came off the wheel of Tom Boonen to beat the Belgian to the line and open up a six-second advantage over the Quick Step rider at the top of the general classification thanks to his winning time bonus.

Previous race leader Fabian Cancellara is now down to fifth position overall, 27 seconds behind.

Greipel’s victory comes two days after the Team Columbia rider took advantage of a dramatic late pile-up to win stage four — with Wednesday being a rest day.” Read more from CNN International

VINAROS, Spain — German rider Andrei Greipel won Thursday’s fifth stage of the Spanish Vuelta and took the overall lead.

Greipel overtook Tom Boonen of Belgium in the final few metres to take the 174-kilometre stage in four hours 27 minutes 54 seconds.

The Team Colombia-High Road rider’s second straight stage win gives him a combined time of 19:40:23, enough to replace Fabian Cancellara as the overall leader.

Dominique Rollin of Boucherville, Que., who rides for Canadian-owned Cervelo, was 11th in the stage and is eighth overall. Garmin-Slipstream rider Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., was 108th and is 84th overall, while teammate Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria was 164th to drop him to 132nd overall.” Read more from the AP
