“Favourite Cancellara Takes Tour Of Spain Opening Stage

ASSEN, Netherlands (Reuters) - Pre-stage favourite Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland secured victory in the Tour of Spain’s opening time trial Saturday.

The Saxo Bank rider completed the 4.8-km course on Assen’s motorcycle circuit nine seconds ahead of Belgian Tom Boonen, with American Tyler Farrar in third spot.

Cancellara also won the opening time trial in this year’s Tour de France.

“I wouldn’t have betted on me winning because I haven’t raced much since the Tour,” the 28-year-old told reporters.

“But when I was doing my pre-stage warm-up I said to myself I had to go out and do my best regardless.” Read more from The New York Times…

ASSEN, Netherlands — Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara crossed the line in five minutes 20 seconds Saturday to win the opening stage of the 4.8-kilometre Spanish Vuelta.

Belgium’s Tom Boonen finished 12 seconds behind at the Assen Moto GP circuit to take second place while American Tyler Farrar was third in 05:32.

Alexandre Vinokourov, back after serving a ban for blood doping during the 2007 Tour de France, finished seventh, 18 seconds behind Cancellara.” Read more from the AP…

ASSEN, Netherlands — Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara of the Saxo Bank team won the Tour of Spain opening prologue on Saturday which took place hundreds of miles away from Spain at Assen’s motorcycling circuit in northern Holland

Cancellara, who also won the first stage of the Tour de France this year in Monaco, covered the 4.8km stage in 5min 20sec, nine seconds ahead of Belgian star Tom Boonen, and 12sec in front of third-placed Tyler Farrar.

Controversial Kazakh Alexandre Vinokourov, making his big race return after a two-year doping suspension, was seventh on the day, 18sec behind the winner.
