You know where you are when you see a sea of tattoo’d Campagnolo fanatics, you are at the first annual San Diego Custom Bicycle Show.
Those attending the San Diego Custom bicycle show found a museum of art where builders put their heart, soul, and passion on display. I recently spoke to an attendant who recently bought a Baylis with Campagnolo and had this to say, “This isn’t your everyday mass produced single serving disposable bicycle show”.
Greg Townsend shows us 3 bikes he brought to the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show. His personal bike, a freshly painted customer bike, and a grass track racing bike.
Jeremy Shlachter shows us one of his track bikes and give us an insight into what inspires his bike designs and the philosophy behind his style of build.
Jeff Lyon of Lyonsport Custom Frames shows us two models of frames, one from his Lavecaise collection and one from the Lyon line. The Lavecaise frame is a frame that Jeff offers, that is just as good as his original Lyon line, but is available quicker because of the different finishing options available. For the customer looking for unlimited options on their frame, and is willing to wait a little bit longer, the Lyon line of frames might be the ticket.
Craig Calfee brings to the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show the Bamboosero, a bike he has developed and is expecting to import to the United States. Made mostly of bamboo from the African region of Ghanna. The bike will be available soon for the low price of $600, and will be an economic stimulus for Ghanna. Also, new from Calfee is a carbon belt driven Tandem, said to be stronger than a normal chain, but at half the weight.
Mike Kone of Rene Herse Bicycles shows us a bike he built for a customer, dubbed the 650b. It’s outfitted with a nice selection of parts to both be functional and stylish. Hub generated lights with internal wiring, racks, and fenders. Nice comfortable 650b tires that allow the customer to ride on the fast club rides, if they choose to, but is also well within it’s comfort zone on dirt roads.
Daryl Roberts of FORM Cycles, a newly formed Sedona Arizona company, unveils a beautiful new road bike. A sweet stainless steel bike that has the distinction of being the very first stainless steel road bike to incorporate the BB30 standard.
Ben Farvar of Argonaut Cycles, based out of Portland Oregon, shows us two beautiful bikes. A team issue steel cross bike, the Fatum Navis, and a very thought out commuter bike. Also, we get Ben’s take on, “Why steel?”…
When you fist walk into the exhibit hall of the San Diego Custom Bicycle Show, the first builder you’re greeted with is legendary builder Bruce Gordon. We were able to wrangle Bruce away from the throngs of fans for a few minutes to talk about his two newest commuter bicycles.
