The Holidays Will Be Brighter For Some of the Homeless Children in Southern California

December 22nd, 2009 by thien

PHILADELPHIA, PA – For Amber Neben, professional cyclist and 2008 Olympian, there is a bigger purpose in life than winning races. This week Amber will donate over 40 bikes to homeless children in Southern California. With help from Fuji bikes, SixSixOne helmets, Edge Cycle Sports of Orange County, and a volunteer crew of bike builders, the children will each receive a bike of their very own.

“I have been through a lot of adversity in my life and I have fought through it and succeeded but the journey has been far from easy,” said Amber. “I think that it is an important message for these kids at this time in their life. Everything might look hopeless, but it is only temporary. They need to keep fighting, to not give up on life or their dreams. I want to do something and share something with them that gives them hope.”

Enjoy Real Food and Higher Performance with The Athlete’s Plate

December 14th, 2009 by thien

Boulder, CO, USA – Fuel-starved endurance athletes are notorious convenience eaters, scarfing pre-packaged products and expensive prepared foods that offer a quick fix for their ravenous appetites. But these food products and supplements leave athletes under-nourished, delaying recovery and preventing their highest performance.

For endurance athletes, there is no substitute for real food. The Athlete’s Plate: Real Food for High Performance debunks the myth that busy athletes lack the time to fuel with real food. Professional chef and endurance athlete Adam Kelinson guides athletes from grocery store to kitchen, offering time-saving shopping and cooking strategies that make preparing delicious, nutritious meals a pleasure. The Athlete’s Plate is now available in bookstores, endurance sports shops, and online.

Kelinson demonstrates how buying local, seasonal foods will save time and money. He explains how organic whole foods provide more nutrients than conventionally grown food and how a minimalist approach to cooking is more convenient and nutritious than laborious gourmet recipes.

Bend, Ore. —Danny Summerhill (Englewood, Colo./Garmin-Felt) and Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Cal Giant) earned the U23 and Junior 17-18 national titles as the next generation of American cyclo-cross was featured on a muddy course in Bend on Saturday. Four master men’s titles were also awarded on the penultimate day of racing at the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships.

Temperatures warmed into the forties around Bend’s Old Mill District causing treacherously slippery course conditions as the early week snow and ice turned to mud in time for the mid-day U23 national championship.

“It was nothing like I ever expected,” said Summerhill. “I’ve been here for a week, watching the snow. Of course all the days out on the course leading up to today were nothing like the actual race. It was completely new to me, the whole course and all the muddiness; ice under mud and mud under ice.”

Moving up age classes after a stellar silver medal showing in last year’s 17-18 contest Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./Champion Systems) grabbed the hole shot just ahead of Summerhill and mountain bike pro Chance Noble (Camarillo, Calif./Cal Giant), who shot up from the fourth row. With last year’s junior national champion Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Stevens Classic Cycle) out of contention due to a mechanical, the three leaders rode together out front for the early part of the race. It wasn’t until the start of the third lap that Keough fell off pace after a bobble on the off camber downhill on the back side of the course. Noble was able to stay with Summerhill for the next few laps but ultimately fell off the pace of the former junior world championship bronze medalist, settling for second in the U23 contest. Check out USA Cycling’s YouTube page to watch an interview with Summerhill.

Bend, Ore. — More than 5,000 fans watched Tim Johnson (Middleton, Mass./Cannondale/Cyclossworld.com) upset hometown favorite and reigning national champion Ryan Trebon (Bend, Ore./Kona-FSA) to win the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships elite men’s national title. The number one ranked cyclo-cross rider in the world Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Planet Bike) reeled in her sixth consecutive cyclo-cross crown in the elite women’s race. Four Collegiate national titles were also awarded on the final day of competition at the USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships in Bend on Sunday.

“The crowd was just unbelievable the whole time, just going nuts,” said Johnson following his victory. “Bend really loves their bikes and this was a great place to have a national championships.”

Johnson, Jonathon Page (Northfield, N.H./Planet Bike) and Jeremy Powers (Niantic, Conn./Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) were able to get out front early. After Page was forced to make a pit stop and Powers went down, Johnson soon found himself all alone on the front. Much to the delight of the crowd, Trebon surged to within a dozen or so seconds of the leader with around two laps to go. The powerful Oregonian however couldn’t close the gap, leaving Page to ride solo to his third elite national title.

December 13th, 2009 by thien

Cronulla AU – Fly V australia’s Ben Kersten has added the Cronulla International GP to his 2009 US PRO criterium championship victory.

In a demanding race characterized by aggressive riding and a wind swept course, Kersten rode a ‘smart’ race covering a number of dangerous moves. Kersten was always tactically well placed in the peloton conserving much needed strength for the final run into the line.

Kersten said, “The finish into that strong southerly suited me, I jumped first at 150 meters to go and
immediately gapped Graham Brown by about a length and had enough strength into the head wind to hold off C J Sutton.”

With a small contingent of 3 starting the Cronulla International Grand Prix team Fly V australia displayed excellent team work with Chris Pryor and Leon Vogels bringing dangerous breaks back towards the end of the race ensuring that the result was to be decided by the fast men in a dash to the line.
