OUCH Presented by Maxxis sending full contingent of American riders to U.S. Pro Champs.

August 28th, 2009 by thien

Oakland, CA – The OUCH Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis has its full contingent of nine American riders in Greenville, S.C. for the U.S. Pro Cycling Championships this weekend.

For Saturday’s 33.4km time trial, the team will have four riders who have proven abilities against the clock. Headlining will be two-time U.S. Pro Time Trial Champion Chris Baldwin, who comes out of the Tour of Utah with great form despite some bad luck on the queen stage of the race.

Joining Baldwin will be Floyd Landis and Roman Kilun, who posted a top-10 result at last year’s U.S. Pro TT, and 2008 elite national time trial champion Jonathan Chodroff.

Baldwin and Landis will be top candidates for the hilly 177km road race on Sunday, along with Patrick McCarty, who posted a top-10 overall result at the Tour of Utah. Team captain Tim Johnson’s all-around strengths are also well suited for the 33.4km circuit that includes Paris Mountain.

Missouri will be infested with Spiders

August 28th, 2009 by thien

SpiderTech to sponsor the Tour of Missouri pro cycling race

Missouri is about to spin a web of Spiders from one end of the state to the other. NUCAP MEDICAL’s SpiderTech, the sixteen ready-to-apply taping applications known as Spiders designed to improve performance by supporting muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, alleviate pain and correct joint problems, will sponsor the third running of the Tour of Missouri bicycle race scheduled to take place September 7-13, 2009 featuring some of cycling’s marquee stars from fifteen of the best professional teams from around the globe. Specifically, the sponsorship will directly support the medical team that provides health care for the entire race caravan, including the riders, directors, officials, and team and race staff.

“In terms of the demands placed on a professional athlete’s body, a pro cycling stage race ranks amongst the toughest,” said SpiderTech creator Dr. Kevin Jardine. “We are thrilled to be involved with the Tour of Missouri, one of the biggest bike races in the U.S, as it shall provide a demanding environment – a mobile laboratory if you will - to further demonstrate SpiderTech’s ability to successfully improve performance, reduce pain and accelerate recovery. SpiderTech excels in this type of event because of the various ways it can contribute to an athlete’s and a team’s successes. In fact, we’ve tagged SpiderTech as ‘the legal advantage’ because of the numerous benefits use of the product can provide.”

Team Type 1 Will Remain Continental Squad For 2010

August 28th, 2009 by thien

Atlanta – Team Type 1 will register as a UCI Continental team for the 2010 season, CEO and Founder Phil Southerland announced on the eve of the Greenville Hospital System USA Cycling Professional Championship weekend.

“Thanks to our great sponsors and partners, we now have a clearer picture of our long-term program,” Southerland said. “We head into next season with the intention of going after Pro Continental status in 2011.”

In 2009, Team Type 1 was one of 13 Continental teams licensed through USA Cycling and the International Cycling Union (UCI). Only one U.S.-based squad was registered as a Pro Continental team.

The Team Type 1 men’s professional team, which was founded in 2008 following a pair of amateur victories at the Race Across America (RAAM) in 2006 and 2007, has achieved 98 victories and 215 podium finishes. Co-founder Joe Eldridge and Southerland are two of four riders on the squad who have Type 1 diabetes.

Brooke Miller and Team TIBCO take on the Chris Thater Memorial this Sunday

August 28th, 2009 by thien

Los Altos, California – Team TIBCO goes to the next installment of the NRC series – the Chris Thater Memorial Grand Prix on Sunday – with a five-rider squad that has proven to be a criterium powerhouse all season.

Sprinter Brooke Miller headlines the crew, bolstered by rotating lead-outs Lauren Tamayo and Joanne Kiesanowski. Katharine Carroll, who won the Downer’s Grove warm-up race two weeks ago, brings her firepower and Emma Rickards adds her aggressive attacking style to the squad.

“This group has raced a lot together this year,” said Miller, who enjoyed four wins in six races over nine days in April and May in the Southest criterium with this core unit. They also helped Miller to wins in Charlotte and Hanes Park earlier this month.

Featured Review: KHS Urban X
by JJsKHS

Price Paid: $399.00 at Summit Ski and Bike
Review Date: August 24, 2009
Used product for: 3 months
Overall Rating: 5 of 5
Value Rating: 4 of 5

Bike Setup:
KHS Urban-X w/ grocery panniers, kryptonite u-lock, and Planet Bike Blaze front/rear lights.

Summary:
This is really an excellent commuter for the price. I was looking at models selling for two and three times as much online, but when I went into the store the Urban X was the first one the guy pulled off the rack. I was somewhat hesitant, as I had it in my mind I was going with a single front chain ring with Nexus as opposed to a derailleur setup, but I’m so glad I went with the X. I routinely use all three rings here in LA, and would be at a loss on some of the steeper grades without a full 21 speeds. To think, I was considering a fixie!

Strengths:
Really well equipped stock, especially for the money: serviceable wheels, 21 speeds, a rack, fenders, etc. The stock Kendra Kwest tires are great at absorbing some of the “noise” and shock from the road, while still being fast. Bulletproof, too — ran over broken glass and all kinds of urban detritus and no flats yet. The Urban X has proven itself to be durable, usable, and an overall nice bike. Perfect commuter at a reasonable price; one only needs lights and panniers to be fully stocked and ready to roll.

Weaknesses:
The stock “Brooks-style” seat killed me. I tried and tried to get on with it, but just couldn’t. Put about 50 miles on it and was still undecided, then went on a 20 mile cruise one day and was hurting so bad by the end that I literally rode directly to the bike shop on my way home for a replacement saddle. Tried all kinds of adjustments, etc, and just couldn’t get accustomed to the stocker. This is, ultimately, a minor issue and a personal choice; your mileage may vary. Definitely not a deal breaker either way; if you don’t like the stocker, get a suitable replacement for $20-$50 and you’re all set.

That aside, my only other gripe is the paint, which seems fairly easy to chip. Granted, it’s not egg shell delicate, but I hit the metal part of my U-lock against it fairly gently and dinged away a tiny (tiny) bit of paint. This happened another time when I banged my pannier hook against the frame. It’s aluminum, so I’m not worried about corrosion, and I got this thing for riding, not for looking, but I think the paint should be stuck on there a bit better, and be more rugged. But it’s not terrible or anything, and looks nice. Minor gripe.

Similar Products Used:
Rode a heavy, poorly sprung, and poorly maintained Raleigh M50 Mountain/Trail around the urban landscape for quite a time, and thought I was cruising on a nice bike. Heh, right. Riding on the KHS is like night and day, primarily because it was made from the ground up for urban riding, has city tires, and doesn’t weigh ten thousand pounds. Now it makes me laugh when I see literally every other person on the road riding either a low end mountain bike like my old M50, or a full on race/road bike, neither of which are entirely appropriate for city riding.

Double Down at Mandalay Bay Special Prize Recognizes Consistency at CrossVegas and The USA CRITS Finals

August 24th, 2009 by thien

Boulder, Colo - With two of America’s top cycling events planned during Interbike week in Las Vegas, it’s a perfect opportunity to recognize riders who can excel in both cyclocross and criterium racing. Double Down at the Mandalay Bay is designed to do just that.

Double Down at Mandalay Bay recognizes those riders with a vacation prize to the top men and women riders who compete in both CrossVegas scheduled September 23rd and the USA CRITS Finals scheduled September 24th.

“The Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino is proud to be a part of the two largest cycling events to hit Las Vegas,” stated Scott Voeller Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino VP of Marketing. “We think the Double Down prize is a great way to reward the athletes who are consistent at both CrossVegas and The USA Crits Finals.”

In 2008 the Double Down at Mandalay Bay was captured by Adam Meyerson in the men’s category and Katie Compton in the women’s category. The two racers combined strong finishes in both CrossVegas and the USA CRITS Final to take the vacation packages.
