Five earn first Stars-and-Stripes of 2008 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships

December 12th, 2008 by thien

KANSAS CITY - The USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships opened on Thursday with just over 50 master-aged riders tackling the demanding course at Kansas City’s Tiffany Springs Park. Gary Thacker (Louisville, Colo./Chipotle-Titus), Phil Bannister (Putney, Vt./Putney-West Hill), Rob Lea (Taneytown, Md./Team Fuji), and Walt Axthelm (Durango, Colo./Durango Wheel Club) won the first of 34 stars-and-stripes jerseys to be awarded at this year’s competition.

With sunny skies and temperatures comfortably in the 30’s the first national championship contest went off at 1:00 p.m. After the early week snow and the morning’s B races, the well-broken-in course made for a slow start to the master men’s 55-59 contest. The slick corners were however no problem for Louisville, Colorado’s Thacker who moved to the front on the first lap and never looked back. The 55-year old veteran mountain biker took up cyclo-cross only three years ago, but has quickly taken to America’s fastest growing cycling discipline.

December 11th, 2008 by thien

Louisville, KY - Endurance Films and indoor cycling mogul Mad Dogg Athletics, owner of the Spinning brand, announce the release of two new volumes in the popular RIDES training series. Joining RIDES: The Rockies and RIDES: Las Vegas, this year’s additions bring the canyons of Orange County, CA into the mix in RIDES: Southern California as well as North Carolina’s rolling pastures in RIDES: North Carolina.

RIDES first gained notoriety as being the first series to remove the viewer from the gym setting and place them on the open road within a group ride of pro cyclists and triathletes. To further enhance the training experience, on-screen tips, regional facts and motivational quotes keep the viewer engaged while a great soundtrack fills the room with catchy tunes. The newly released DVDs continue this great tradition but also give the viewers an optional coaching voice over track, adding audible direction from USA Cycling, USA Triathlon, and Spinning certified coaches. The DVDs feature newly designed consoles which provide additional guidance through the challenging 60 min workouts as well as alternate music tracks to enhance the variety.

Sure the EC90 has been in development for quite some time, but when you’re setting out to make the best carbon crank in the world, as Easton has set to do, you want to take your time and do it right.

According to Easton, they throughly tested every high end crank currently available for ultimate strength, fatigue strength, and stiffness and aimed to best them. Luxembourg Anti-Doping Agency clears Fränk Schleck for further involvement in Spanish case.

December 10th, 2008 by thien

Based on the evidence and further investigations made by the Luxembourg Anti-Doping Agency it was decided not to open a disciplinary case against Fränk Schleck and the agency has decided to close the case.

“First of all, I’m happy that I had to chance to prove that I was innocent. I have a lot of respect for the work the Luxembourg Anti-Doping Agency had to do and I have been totally available for all their inquiries. Throughout the whole process I have been confident that I would come out good because I have a completely clear conscience. Now, I can focus on the new season and I’m looking forward to coming back strong”, says Fränk Schleck.

“We are certainly very happy that the explanation that Fränk Schleck has given us, the press and our sponsors was now confirmed by the Luxembourg Anti-Doping Agency as true. It was vital to us that Fränk had not been involved in the wrongdoings concerning the case in Spain and we feel that the confidence that we have in Fränk has been rewarded. I’m sure that this has been quite a stressful time for him, but at the same time it will give him strength and motivation to be even better next season”, says Bjarne Riis and states that the team will continue to do its utmost in the fight against doping.

“All of our riders are ambassadors of a clean sport and with our groundbreaking, independent anti-doping program we can rule out any wrongdoing going on unnoticed and we take sincere comfort in that. The team has gone to great lengths in the fight against doping and we will continue to make our mark here along with our efforts on the roads”, adds Riis.

10 Tips to Avoid Looking Like a Cycling Rookie

December 9th, 2008 by thien

10 Tips to Avoid Looking Like a Cycling Rookie - By Kurt Gensheimer

With the recent explosion in cycling popularity through the dominance of Lance Armstrong, the United States is experiencing record growth in the sport of cycling. This is a particularly encouraging development in a country which has largely associated cyclists with automotive target practice using projectiles like Gatorade bottles and 7-11 Big Gulps.

Each day a new cyclist dons his or her two wheeled steed for the first time is a day where more people learn to tolerate the sport. However, if you go out on the road and look like the quintessential cycling geek who clearly doesn’t know what they’re doing, you will only hurt the cyclist’s cause for social acceptance.

We all have to start somewhere, and I was definitely not immune to being a neophyte. I had all the rookie characteristics: the obscenely large helmet, haggard looking shorts, baggy jersey, hairy legs, greasy chain marks on my calves, bobbing posture on the bike – oh yes, I was indeed a tool.
However, not all rookies have to be subject to ridicule. There is a way to look experienced without having thousands of miles under your legs; you just have to pay attention to the details. This article is targeted towards folks who are new to the sport of cycling and wish to avoid the potential embarrassment I was put through as a rookie.

Tip 1: No Pro Kits
The cardinal violation in trying to be a cool cyclist is when you buy a full professional team kit (jersey, shorts, socks, etc.) of a team you do not ride for. Nothing screams ROOKIE  louder than a full Discovery Channel uniform on a non-payroll cyclist. Steer clear of these overpriced kits.  The only time these types of jerseys are acceptable is when they are vintage. General rule of thumb is 10 years after a team’s disbanding. For instance, if you hit the road in a vintage Motorola or Coors Light jersey, you get big style points. Just make sure you know a few of the cyclists who rode for those teams so that when approached by other cyclists, you can sound knowledgeable.

Tip 2: Buy the coolest helmet you can afford
When it comes to helmets, don’t skimp. You are going to be wearing this piece of equipment all the time (hopefully), and you want to be motivated to put it on. If you have some cheapo brain bucket or a nicer one that is two sizes too small, you’ll never want to wear it. Back in the day when I was young and stupid, I thought riding around with no helmet and gel that made my hair glisten was cool - well, it wasn’t. My Giro Pneumo helmet looks far cooler than my bare cranium, especially when it’s hemorrhaging blood after a head-over-shammy 30 mile per hour crash.

Cool helmet or hemorrhaging cranium? I’ll take the helmet, please.
