hincapiebarkleyjersey-798-99.jpgGreenville, S.C. - Hincapie(TM) Sportswear, Inc. (Hincapie), manufacturer and marketer of distinctive clothing for the performance cyclist, and Barkley, one of the largest independent advertising agencies in the U.S., are partnering to create a new development cycling team that focuses on riders under 23 years old. The Hincapie Barkley Development Team will consist of eleven 15-23 year-old development riders and four elite racers.

The Team is focused on promoting the sport of cycling through an experienced-rider mentoring program that allows U23/Junior riders to race and train with experienced Pro/Elite cyclists. The mentors will provide guidance in every aspect of the sport, including training techniques, racing strategy, nutrition and sports psychology. Riders will also be supported with some of the best racing equipment in the world, including new Giant TCR Advanced carbon fiber bicycles. The Hincapie Barkley Development Team, which is based out of Greenville, S.C., will participate in various sanctioned USA Cycling events throughout the year.

“We have promoted cycling on many levels from event promotion to race team management, and this is the next step in our support of the sport,” said Rich Hincapie, Hincapie Barkley Team Leader and president of Hincapie Sportswear. “My brother, George, and I understand how far you can go in this sport when you have quality opportunities, and we’re proud to provide support to these talented junior cyclists.”

Rich and George Hincapie are both products of USA Cycling’s junior development program. The aim of the Hincapie Barkley Development Team is to provide the missing link between casual competition and racing on the elite pro level. Racers on the Hincapie Barkley Team will be groomed and managed to help them graduate from the amateur ranks into the pro peloton.

“Two-time National Champion Craig Lewis was a rider on our Hincapie Elite Team several years ago,” said Rich Hincapie. “He recently signed a professional contract to ride with George on Team High Road (formerly T-Mobile), one of the most prestigious pro teams in the world. In addition to Craig’s success, our Elite Team has also developed numerous National and World Champions, so we know the program can succeed.”

“Barkley is proud to partner with Hincapie Sportswear,” said Brian Brooker, CEO and chief creative officer, Barkley. “This unique opportunity is a natural extension of Barkley’s active, engaging culture. Our agency is continually exploring new ways to learn more about how people are living their lives, and the Hincapie Barkley Development Team is a strong example of that philosophy.”

Celebrate Black History on Adventure Cycling’s Underground Railroad Bicycle Route

January 30th, 2008 by thien

Adventure Cycling

Celebrate Black HisotryMissoula, Montana — Adventure Cycling Association, North America’s largest cycling membership organization, celebrates Black History Month by announcing a dynamic spring and summer line-up of bicycle trips and events planned for their Underground Railroad Route (UGRR), as well as available maps.

The Underground Railroad Bicycle Route honors the bravery of those who fled bondage and those who provided shelter by tracing “the route to freedom” that escaped slaves may have followed 150 years ago or more. According to Ginny Sullivan, New Routes Coordinator at Adventure Cycling, “These bike trips and maps provide an opportunity for individuals, clubs, and communities to engage in an active homage to those courageous men and women by riding all or part of the Underground Railroad Route.”

From April 27 to June 13 cyclists can explore the full Underground Railroad Route by joining Adventure Cycling’s Underground Railroad tour, passing numerous historic sites along a 2,028-mile corridor from Mobile, AL to Owen Sound, ONT. In the words of a cyclist on the 2007 inaugural ride, “To walk in the same footsteps of the men and women who made this trek, it’s unbelievable. The things Harriet Tubman and the other people on the Underground Railroad were able to do with so little support, it’s inspiring.”

The Association is also offering a fully supported, eight-day tour on the last leg of the UGRR from July 27 to August 3. Riding from Buffalo, NY to Owen Sound, ONT, participants can expect gorgeous landscapes including the Niagara River (where thousands jumped into boats or leapt into fast-churning waters to swim to freedom in Canada) and Niagara Falls. After reaching the Niagara Escarpment summit, riders will make a quick descent to Owen Sound and end their journey by celebrating with locals and visitors at the 146th Annual Emancipation Day Celebration.

Argon 18 and Team H2V United Against Juvenile Diabetes

January 30th, 2008 by thien

argon18logo.jpg

argontheprovince.jpgArgon 18 wishes to spread the news about a new and striking initiative from Team H2V aiming to increase funding in the fight against juvenile diabetes. This undertaking comes in the form of a new book, proceeds from which will be directed to research work on the illness.

Last September, a group of accomplished cyclists formed Team H2V with the aim of riding across Canada, from (you guessed it) Halifax to Vancouver. This odyssey, accomplished on Argon 18 bikes, was enshrined in the Guiness Book of Records and served to raise over a million dollars for the benefit of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (JDRF).

The newly-published book is entitled The Principles of the Ride: How to Maximize what’s Inside You. It was written by two members of H2V, Matt Young and Willie Cromack. Inspired by the cross-country experience, the book deals with matters of motivation and personal accomplishment.

For each copy sold, ten dollars will be forwarded to the JDRF and in this way, the authors hope to raise a further $ 250,000 to benefit the organization. The book can be ordered directly from Vancouver’s John Henry Bicycle Shop website at: www.johnhenrybikes.com

About Argon 18
With its headquarters in Montreal since its inception in 1989, Argon 18 has built itself a growing reputation in the cycling world. All Argon 18 cycles are designed by ex-olympian Gervais Rioux and stand out for their remarkable mix of time-tested, classic design elements and cutting-edge technological innovation. Distributed in 35 countries, Argon 18 bikes exhibit an optimal blend of comfort, rigidity and light weight. In 2006, Argon 18 bikes were ridden to three triathlon World Champion titles. In 2007, the company was official bike sponsor to pro womens’ squad Teamexpresscopy.com, with victories including the current Canadian road race Championship. Argon 18 is also the official bike of the Australian pro mens’ team FRF-Couriers/NSWIS (UCI Oceania Tour) and of the new Canadian pro men’s Team Race Pro/Planet Energy (UCI America Tour).

About Team H2V
The team comprises: Taylor Balagno, Matt Young, Richard Alm, Willie Cromack, Keith Nicoll, Kyle Balagno and Bryan Kelly. Last September, they rode the 6,000 kilometers that separate Halifax from Vancouver in 9 days, taking in several of the country’s largest cities. In doing so, Team H2V raised $ 1,000,000 for the benefit of the JDRF. Argon 18 was proud to have played its part by supplying the riders with bikes worthy of their effort and of their will to overcome juvenile diabetes.

2009 NAHBS Venue Set - Announcement to be made at the show awards presentation

January 30th, 2008 by thien

logo-nahbs-w1501.jpg

Speedway, Indiana - After protracted speculation and negotiations, and what seemed like a thousand requests from cities all over, the 2009 North American Handmade Bicycle Show has decided on a venue for 2009 in what will be its fifth year of operation. The venue for the ‘09 show will remain a closely-kept secret until the awards ceremony in the show hall at 3 p.m. Sunday 10th February.

The flourishing handmade bicycles show features 156 exhibitors from three continents. It is accepted as the place to meet the builders of the world’s most beautiful bikes, and with its series of seminars and expert panels is the foremost information exchange in the handmade cycling industry. The nature of the meetings is not only between customers and builders, but also a place for builders to meet builders, and component and accessory manufacturers meet builders.

“The industry needed a place for everybody to gather and talk about hand made bicycles from their particular perspective, that’s really what it’s all about. Now it’s gotten popular, we have to keep moving because it’s only fair to bring the show to within a day’s drive of each of the major cycling centers around the nation. Of course this makes a lot more work for me, the guy who has to make all the arrangements, but I’m interested in providing the best service that I can to all concerned with the show. I may not be Hemingway, but I still think of the show as a moveable feast,” says show director, Don Walker.

The venue for the ‘09 show will be a closely-kept secret until the awards ceremony in the show hall at 3 p.m. Sunday 10th February.

Apart from having the requisite convention center, here are a few features of the new venue:

* The governor of the state concerned wrote to express his desire to host the show
* The host city is within one day’s drive of approximately 100 million people
* The state concerned is adding $20 million a year to build, expand and link the state’s trail systems, and sees bicycling as a major part of that
* Three micro-breweries are situated within two blocks of the expo hall, and the host hotel is right across the road
* The city is regarded as one of the most hospitable in the USA

“Frankly, I think if I can move NAHBS around the country, running the show almost single-handed, then other trade shows probably could too… if they really wanted to provide that level of customer service,” states Walker, who may not be Hemingway but has never been afraid to speak his mind.

About The North American Handmade Bicycle Show
Having started with 23 exhibitors in Houston, Texas, in 2005, the North American Handmade Bicycle Show is dedicated to showcasing the talents of individuals around the world whose art form is the bicycle. It aims to be a gathering point – online and in person – for framebuilders, tubing and component manufacturers, and consumers looking for custom-made bikes; for the sharing of ideas; and for the promotion of this industry and its traditions. Host Cities Announced for 2008 Tour of Missouri - One day added, four new cities announced

January 30th, 2008 by thien

Jefferson City, Mo. – Twelve cities around the Show Me State have been selected as Start or Finish cities for the second edition of the Tour of Missouri, an elite, point-to-point cycling stage race to be held September 8-14, 2008.

The second Tour of Missouri has been extended from six to seven days after an extremely successful inaugural event in 2007, and will showcase some of the state’s most beautiful roads and rolling terrain, rich history, and diverse scenery, from the start in St. Joseph, site of the Pony Express, to Kansas City, to the Ozarks, to the bourgeoning wine country, culminating with a blockbuster weekend again with stops in historic St. Charles and the ultimate finish in St. Louis with the Gateway Arch as a backdrop.

Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and Host City representatives at Route Announcement - January 30th, 2008“Missouri is a beautiful place to call home, filled with countless natural and historic sites of interest to visitors both near and far,” Gov. Blunt said. “Lt. Gov. Kinder and I took the initiative to bring this race to our state because we recognized the many benefits it could bring to Missourians and our economy. Our state is prospering with the pro-growth, pro-jobs initiatives we have enacted together with our commitment to tourism with new signature events like the Tour of Missouri.”

Eight of the 2007 Tour host venues will return for this year’s edition, including Kansas City, Springfield, St. Charles, and St. Louis, which will each host a stage finish, Clinton and Lebanon which will each host a stage start, and Branson, second-time host of the individual time trial. A pass-through and start city last year in 2008, Jefferson City will host a stage finish with race circuits for the first time.

Joining the Tour of Missouri roster of hosts as a finish city is Rolla, and St. James and Hermann will each participate as a start venue, providing their communities the opportunity to see the exciting buildup to each day’s stage race, where racers sign in for the day’s stage, give interviews, and sign autographs for the public. St. Joseph, previous host of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials for weightlifting, is a new start city.

“This event proved, in only its first year, to be hugely successful for all involved, most importantly the great host communities of the Tour,” Lieutenant Governor Peter Kinder, chair of the Tourism Commission of Missouri. “It was very successful for the state, as tourism vehicle, people from 73 countries caught part of the event via live webcasts and more than 350,000 showed up on roads of the event.”

TofMo_Map-1-25-08The 2008 Tour of Missouri will take place as follows:

STAGE 1 / Monday, Sept. 8
St. Joseph to Kansas City , road race with circuits (90 mi / 144.81 km)

STAGE 7 / Sunday, September 14
St. Louis , circuit race (75 mi / 120.68 km)

“The Tour of Missouri is perfectly positioned between the Olympic Games in Bejing and the World Championships in late September,” said Chris Aronhalt, Managing Partner, of the event organizers Medalist Sports. “We can expect the field to include some of the top cyclists who have either competed in the Games or are preparing for the Worlds. This will be a good course for them.”

The Tour of Missouri will field 120 of the world’s top cyclists, many of whom raced in last year’s inaugural race and were very happy with the terrain.

“Winning the Tour of Missouri was one of the highlights of my season. I received tremendous support from everyone and the fans along the route were awesome. The Tour of Missouri goes through some beautiful countryside, and I hope to return in September.” George Hincapie, 2007 Tour of Missouri Overall Winner.

About the Tour of Missouri
After an exceptionally successful inaugural Tour of Missouri in 2007, the Show Me State will again welcome 120 of the world’s elite cyclists on a 600-mile point-to-point race, to be held September 8-14, 2008. The second edition of the Tour will include seven days of racing, from Kansas City to the Ozarks, over the Katy Trail, along Route 66 and the historic Missouri River, with a fantastic finish under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. The race is sanctioned by the UCI and USA Cycling, the international and national governing bodies for cycling, respectively. It is ranked as a 2.1, second in ranking to only the Tour de Georgia and Amgen Tour of California in North American cycling. The event’s management group is Medalist Sports of Tyrone, Ga., the organizers of both the California and Georgia races. KOM Sports Marketing of Colorado Springs, Colo., is the event’s marketing agency.

Wilier Triestina Italian bicycles – 102 Years of History

January 30th, 2008 by wilier

wilier_cento.jpg

Wilier Triestina was founded as Ciclomeccanica Dal Molin in 1906 by Pietro Dal Molin in Bassano del Grappa, sixty miles from Venice. The town of Bassano, at the foot of the famed Monte Grappa, is today a popular cycling destination. In fact, multiple routes lead to the top of Monte Grappa, and every cyclist you meet during your stay in the area will ask what your best time is up the mountain, and stretch the truth about theirs. So important a benchmark is this climb, in fact, that you can acquire a scanner card to run through a timing device at the bottom, and then again at the top, to officially clock your time. But, alas, we digress…

cento-crono.jpg

So, how is Wilier Triestina pronounced, and what do the words mean? Both names were born out of Italian patriotism following the World Wars. Wilier is an acronym pronounced Vee’-lee-air. Italians use ‘W’ as an abbreviation for the word “Viva”, which means “Long live”. For example, Italian cycling fans will often hold up signs at the Giro that read “W l’Italia”, “W il Giro” or show their support of a specific rider with signs like “W Ballan” or “W Cunego”. The patriotic phrase, “W l’Italia liberata e redenta” (Long live Italy, liberated and redeemed) gave birth to Wilier.Triestina is pronounced Tree-es-tee’-na, and is the Italian equivalent of our English word triestine, which implies anything having to do with the Italian city of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea, including a resident. Following World War II, Trieste and its surrounding coastal area remained part of an occupied free territory. Meanwhile, triestine cycling great and three-time winner of the Giro, Giordano Cottur, was holding his own against contemporaries Fausto Coppi and Gino Bartali. Inspired by Cottur and Trieste’s plight, Dal Molin put together a team with Cottur as leader, calling it Wilier Triestina.

wilier-halberd-logo-small.jpg

In 1946, the Giro featured a stage finish in Trieste. Poetically, Cottur won the stage into his hometown, and soon afterward, the bicycles took on the name of the team. In fact, one of Wilier’s logos is a halberd (similar to a fleur-de-lis), which was inspired by Trieste’s coat of arms.

About Wilier Triestina USA
Wilier Triestina USA is a partnership between Wilier Triestina of Rossano Veneto (near Bassano del Grappa), Italy, and their US importer, Velo Imports, which began distributing the brand in 1999. Like a true Italian business, “Wilier USA” is owned and run by father and son, Angelo and Gianmarco Cilli, themselves Italians. Over the past nine years, Angelo and Gianmarco have sought out and established relationships with elite bicycle retail stores across North America, which have become authorized Wilier dealers. Most years, the Cillis and staff accompany many of their dealers on a trip to Italy for a tour of the Wilier Triestina offices and factory in Rossano, as well as some of the best riding in the world, including many nearby climbs often featured in the Giro d’Italia. Wilier Triestina is the proud sponsor of the Lampre Pro Tour team of Damiano Cunego and Alessandro Ballan. For more information, visit www.wilier-usa.com .

Aaron’s Women’s Pro Cycling - 2008 Team Preview

January 29th, 2008 by Stephanie Gutowski

by Stephanie Gutowski & Lyne Lamoureux

Team Director Carmen D’Aluisio has brought back five key riders from the 2007 squad and added some strong young riders to bolster the 2008 team. The 2007 team was ranked third overall in the NRC for the year with two riders in the individual top five standings.

Aaron

Returning to the team is Katharine Carroll—winner of the Athens Twilight Criterium, the Joe Martin Stage Race and the Sprint Jersey and final stage of the Tour Cycliste Feminin International de l’Ardeche. Also returning is Felicia Gomez, winner of the Queen of the Mountains Jersey and a Stage at the Mount Hood Stage Race and ranked fourth overall on the NRC standings. Division I Collegiate National Champion Rebecca Larson and winner of the Sprint Jersey at the Nature Valley Grand Prix, U.S. Masters National Time Trial Champion Kristin Sanders and Carmen McNellis round out the returning riders. Catherine Powers will also return to the team on a part-time basis while balancing her new teaching career.

New riders for 2008 include U23 U.S. Criterium National Champ Erica Allar, U23 Canadian Time Trial National Champion Julie Beveridge, Canadian standout Allison Testroete, cycling track star Anna Lang and former TEAm Lipton powerhouse Meredith Miller.

RoadBikeReview spent a windy and cold morning in Santa Cruz, California meeting this exciting 2008 Aaron’s Women Pro Cycling team.

team-02.jpg

Team Director, Carmen D’Aluisio -We have a very strong team this year. We are racing for the NRC. The goal of the team is to be on top this season. I think that the competition is going to be very tough . I am really looking forward to how this group will ride.

Erica Allar - A senior at Penn State University, Erica looks forward to graduation so she can put all of her energy into being a professional bike racer.

Julie Beveridge - I’m second year in university. We have such a strong team, we can win a lot of races, we can win crits, we can win hilly races. I just want to help out whoever is riding well that day. If Felicia and Allison are climbing well, Kristin or anyone, I want to get them where they need to be.

Katharine Carroll - When I came in last year, it was a new group, a lot of riders that had shown some potential that had never really proven themselves either in a leadership role, and I think we answered a lot of question about ability and strength last year. I think the goal for the team this year is to take it to the next level where… when you’re called on to do something, to do your job as a team member whether to be the sprinter at the end or the GC leader, that you just get it done and everybody else is in full support of that team goal.

Felicia Gomez - I’m super excited to be on the team again, I think we have a super strong team, we have young talent which I’m really excited about and the addition of Meredith Miller who has a lot of international experience. I think she can really lend a lot to our team as well. For me, in terms of team goals, I think we can contest the NRC , I think we can be…we finished third last year in our first real pro year and I think with the team we have that we can do better than that this year.

Anna Lang - I will continue to do both track and road…but road is very much in the forefront. I want to get into my road schedule. Track is still an integral part of my road racing and training. I wanted to be in a place where the team would work with my schedule. What convinced me was that I could be who I wanted to be here. Carmen said that she was looking for a true sprinter….someone who is not going to be afraid to go for the win. I am racing to win.

Rebecca Larson - For the team, it is to win the NRC which I think we have a good shot at. There are six of us that came back from last year so we had a year of racing together so that’s going to make a big difference. And the new girls are great I think we have a strong team and the fact that we’ve been having so much fun at camp I think it’s just going to keep building.

Carmen McNellis - I am on the National Team and plan on doing a full National schedule. I am not going to do that many races with Aaron’s…I’ll do Montreal Word Cup, which is an important race, Nationals, and Nature Valley. I’ll be spending most of time in Europe. My personal goal on the national team is to learn at every race. I am very new. My goal is to learn and get better at every race.

Meredith Miller -I have always been involved in team sports all my life. So for me, team will always come before my individual goal. Yes individually, I would like to go to the World Championships at the end of the year. If I win a couple of races along the way that’s great. But I am more concerned about the success of the team and whatever success we have making sure it has been a team effort. I guess my goal with this team is to make sure that we do come together as a team, I think there are so many opportunity, we have so much potential on this team that everybody is going to have an opportunity to do well. Whether it’s myself or someone else I just want to encourage every body to take that opportunity and go for it, and just make sure it’s been a team effort along the way.

Catherine Powers - I just want to support the team, I’m a domestique, I pretty much retired. I’m teaching in a bilinguial program in middle school in Boulder, so I’m just racing part time. I love my team and I couldn’t give it all the way up. I just want to support people, be a good domestique. If I end up in a break and get a good result that would be awesome but it’s all good.

Kristin Sanders - My main focus this year is the team. I really only have one personal goal and that’s to go to Nationals. I just want to race my bike for the best results for the best of my team. Whatever that is defined by the team…that will be my goal.

Alison Testroete - What I was really looking for is someone like Carmen who is really well organized, with direction and then a good team, somewhere I just fit in. I feel that if you’re really comfortable in your environment you’ll maximize your performance. And also to have role model in the team, someone I could really look up to that would really help me out.
